San Giovanni Rotondo is the centre of Gargano spirituality, where every year pilgrims come to pray at the tomb of Padre Pio of Pietrelcina.
It is situated in a cultivated valley that opens up to the southeast side of Monte Castellano, on the southern slope of Gargano, and faces Manfredonia.
San Giovanni Rotondo is famous for the Sanctuary of Padre Pio of Pietrelcina and the hospital Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, founded by Padre Pio himself. For over 50 years, San Giovanni Rotondo has been the direction of pilgrims from all over the world because of the monastery where Padre Pio lived and received the stigmata.
